The Church and the 2016 US Presidential Election

Many Christians don’t like either Hillary Clinton nor Donald Trump for various reasons, so they want to vote for a 3rd party candidate. In regards to voting for a 3rd party candidate, it is widely known and basically a guarantee that either Trump or Clinton will get the majority vote. The other two more widely known candidates, Johnson and Stein, don’t have the wide spread backing of the people to even come close to getting the majority vote (the poll numbers clearly show this). Writing in a candidate is another option but has essentially zero chance of getting elected, as there is no widespread support (if the candidate is even known in other parts of the country). People can vote for whomever they want, this is one of the great things about living in a free country! However we need to be smart and use wisdom to select the candidate that best lines up with our beliefs as Christians and also has a chance of being elected. In the 2016 election, this leaves either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton.

Many Christians won’t vote for Donald Trump due to ethical reasons because of his past comments and decisions made in regards to women, minorities, etc. In regards to the ideology about ethical reasons, I’ll say that your morals and the code by which you live your life aren’t affected by who you vote for nor should they be. We as Christians are to follow the example displayed by the Father and Jesus through the Scriptures and leading of the Holy Spirit. While I don’t agree nor condone all the decisions Trump has made, I can’t control his decisions or actions nor am I responsible for them. Neither are you. It is our duty as Christians to seek after our Father, His desires, His will, His thoughts, His truth (1 Ch. 16:11, Jer. 29:13, Matt 6:33, Prov. 28:5). It is our responsibility as Americans to vote for the most fit and able person to lead this country. Therefore as Christians living in America we are to seek God and ask him for insight, discernment, and direction about the upcoming election and who to vote for (Matt 7:7~8).

This is a very important decision in our country and one that the Lord is concerned about as well. Romans 13:1 states “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” Christians are also told to “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution” (1 Peter 2:13). We as Christians are subject to the authorities that have been put in place, so don’t you think it is a good idea to have a say in who’s in charge? The governing authorities affect the people they rule over especially those in the Christian faith as our values and beliefs are openly attacked. This is shown in multiple examples in Scripture, take Saul’s persecution of the early church for example, along with a myriad of examples throughout history. 1 Timothy 2:1~2 says “First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.” Many pray for leaders and those in authority after they are placed into position (which is a good and commendable thing that must be done). However it is also a good idea to pray and seek the Lord in regards to those leaders prior to them going into their position of authority, so that action (yes we must take action! which means voting!) can be taken before someone gets put into office that shouldn’t be. Don’t you think it is a lot easier to lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness with those whom God directed us to elect than those that He didn’t? God will put people into authority based on the wants and desires of the people, regardless if it will turn out good for them (1 Samuel 8). Therefore it is up to the Church to seek after God and His truth, insight, and direction in all things, including the election of the president of the United States of America. The Church is called to be the “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14) which means the Church should be at the forefront leading in love and truth. God needs to have a say in all things and He does that through His people as we seek Him and take action. The mess this country is in is because of the Church. Just like a lighthouse guiding and leading a ship out on the sea, the Church guides and leads people. So as the Church goes, so goes the nation. Church, fellow brothers and sisters, it’s time to stand up. It’s time to seek the Lord with all of our hearts, to seek His heart, His will, His desires, His truth, His righteousness and be directed by the leading of His scriptures and His Holy Spirit. We must be strong and courageous to speak the truth in love (mature love! with a forward thinking vision) and walk in uprightness of heart (Pro. 14:2, Ps. 11:7). As we seek the Lord, the Church will be strengthened and the healing of our nation will begin. “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land“ (2 Ch. 7:14).

Points about Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton
A few points to consider about Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton from a Christian perspective. God cares about lives, especially those who are innocent. Donald Trump is the only pro-life candidate this election out of the four on the ballot. Hillary Clinton supports abortions and is looking to expand support for them even more, thus putting millions of innocent lives at risk. I do find it very interesting that the democratic party is all about saving lives when it comes to guns, yet they completely disregard the lives of babies who never had a fighting chance. In Persecutionregards to women’s rights, Donald Trump has been taking all the heat on this one in the news but I urge you to look at the fruits of what has been taking place with the Obama administration and what Hillary Clinton looks to push even further. Obama and Hillary alike have been pushing LGBT agenda and enforcing it at a federal level. The results of these agendas are a direct attack on religious freedom and on women as a whole. There was an ordinance in the city of Charlotte that was passed and made it so that anyone can use any bathroom they want regardless of gender or genitalia. Yes, this means men can walk into women’s bathrooms or locker facilities legally, no questions asked. This ruling was what caused the HB2 law in NC to be issued to protect women and young girls. HB2 caught the eye of the Obama administration in which they proceeded to threaten the state of NC saying they will withdraw hundreds of millions of dollars in school funding if they pass HB2. This action by the Justice Department is complete manipulation and threats. HB2 was passed to protect innocent women and young girls while giving them peace and ease of mind that they will be safe walking into a public restroom. Yet the Justice Department threatens to remove funding from schools, something completely unrelated to HB2. You can see that the federal government is using any method they can to push their agenda, not taking any concern for women or children. As examples of the danger of the transgender bathroom rulings, there has already been a case in Idaho at a Target store where a male (who identified himself as a transgender woman) took pictures of a woman in a dressing room. In Seattle a man went into a girls swim team locker room, undressed, and waited for the girls team to come in and put their swimsuits on. When asked to leave, he responded with “I’m transgender, I have a right to be here”. Think about the harm that these young girls are now put into by these bathroom rulings that allow men to go into women’s rooms. There was also a case in Alaska, where a high school boy wanted to identify as a girl and thus was allowed to participate in women’s track and field. The boy proceeded to win All-State Honors thus defeating all the girls. Oregon has also passed a law that allows high school boys to identify as girls and play on the girl’s athletic teams which poses a disadvantage for the girls. If you look at these cases created and pushed by democratic agenda, it is the women who are getting preyed upon and being put in harms way. This is a direct result of the Obama administration and the democratic party and is what Hillary is looking to continue and expand. I urge you brothers and (especially you) sisters to look at the fruits that are being produced. In regards to the fruits being produced by leadership, one of the most important facets is our religious liberty which has taken an incredible blow over the past 8 years by the Obama administration. Not only with the things mentioned previously but right now the Obama administration is working to change the Constitution to limit and prohibit our religious freedoms. There are multiple instances where governments are trying to force churches into things against their beliefs and against God’s word. Government officials are looking to put restrictions on what people can say and do in church (one such case is the city of Houston which issued subpoenas demanding that pastors turn over any sermons dealing with homosexuality or gender identity). The federal government is looking to control what churches do and say, of which conflicts with the Scriptures and God’s desires, let alone our Constitution. There are many other facets of this of which Hillary Clinton is in support of and has even worked on to approve. This puts our religious liberty and our freedom in jeopardy. So once again I urge you brothers and sisters to look beyond the news and the headlines and look at the fruit being produced and at God’s desires this coming election.
